Big change in DU celebs! Disputed and religious chapters can be removed

Delhi University (DU) is once again in the headlines for the course change. This time it has been recommended to remove many chapters in the courses of political science and history taught at the post graduate (PG) level of the university. The Standing Committee of the University (Standing Committee) has suggested to remove some chapters which are considered religious, ideological or politically sensitive.

Which chapters recommend to remove?

Potential Chapter removed from political science:

  • ‘Hindu Nationalism: A Reader’ (Christoph Jafarlot) – shows the ideology of Hindu nationalism.
  • ‘In the Belly of the River’ (Amita Bawskar) – based on Narmada movement and tribal rights.
  • ‘Public Policy in South Asia’ – It discusses the alleged ‘Hinduization’ of tribals.
  • ‘Routine Violence’ (Gyanendra Pandey)-This includes the right-wing ideology and comments on Gandhi-Sambarkar-Golwalkar.

Chapter suggested to be removed from history:

  • ‘Sultan Among Hindu Kings’ (Philip B. Wagner) – reflects Islamic influence in Vijayanagar.
  • ‘The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier’ (Richard Eaton)-is focused on the socio-economic expansion of Islam in Bengal.

Disputed subjects were removed earlier also

Significantly, in June 2025, DU had decided to remove the entire paper related to Pakistan, China and Islam from the subject ‘Global Politics’. The university administration argued that these subjects could cause ideological confrontation and disagreement among the students.

What is the argument of the university?

Course review panel and university administration believe that these subjects are quite sensitive and they can cause dispute or tension in students during their studies. Therefore, it has been suggested to remove them to maintain peace and positive educational environment.

Bunty opinion among teachers and students

Two opinions have been formed in the educational world regarding this move of DU. On the one hand some teachers believe that removing such subjects raises questions on academic freedom, on the other hand, some say that it is in the interest of students to avoid controversial subjects.

What will happen next?

At present, the final decision has not been taken to remove these chapters. A formal decision will be taken on this in the next meeting of the university. Till then the eyes of students and teachers will remain on the decision of DU.
