Many people imagine a monthly income of Rs 1.5 lakh with a comfortable lifestyle. However, in the heart of Bengaluru, a city brimming with technological ambition and soaring costs, this figure might paint a surprisingly different picture. The reality, as experienced by a resident, reminds us that even seemingly substantial earnings can be stretched thin by the city’s ever-rising cost of living. Shedding light on the same, a Bengaluru techie shared his story on social media, revealing the harsh reality behind his seemingly comfortable life.

Despite earning a substantial income, he confessed that life in the metro feels ‘fragile’ and lacks stability. In his Reddit post, he wrote, “I’m a 26M living in Bangalore with my to-be wife 26F. I earn about 1.5 L per month and have my family and an EMI to take care of in my hometown. I save up some money each month, let’s say about 30-40k.”

Reminiscing about his childhood dreams, the user recalled picturing a vibrant life in Bengaluru. He said, “As a child, earning this amount was a dream. Living in Bengaluru was a dream. Having a girlfriend and a glamorous routine was a dream. But now that I’m living it, I feel like a fragile pot of flowers that will crack one day all of a sudden.”

“Why, you might ask? Well, I am living on thin ice. Not much is saved up for a backup – if I lose my job, my EMIs and expenses will consume my savings in just 3-4 months. We’re living in a PG now, not a flat – Even thinking about starting a hunt for a flat in Bangalore kills my spirits,” he added.

Above all, his greatest fear is that his parents are super dependent on him. If he doesn’t send money home each month, they will not be able to survive. “Amidst all this responsibility, the chaos of the city is just paralysing – everything is super inflated, and you don’t even get decent things for a fair price. For a cheap price, you just get the shittiest quality of food/grocery/stay/services,” he concluded.

As soon as the post went viral, it quickly garnered the attention of social media users worldwide. His post struck a chord with young professionals who were going through similar challenges, sparking a discussion online about the harsh realities of urban living, the true cost of chasing one’s dreams and financial insecurity.

“Income isn’t wealth. It’s a sad realisation. The only people who get to be secure have generational wealth. Everyone else gets to face the heat.”

Another commented, “Welcome to adult life. Constant anxiety and money worries are the norm.”

“You’ve put the bleakness of life so well. I am a single 24F living on 60K, and I’ve saved nothing and spent nothing at the same time. Net sum null. You know the answer; it is Bangalore, it is India,” said a user.

An individual stated, “I get you, man. See if you can access other sources of income, like your wife can take up a job, or you can start another business, etc. I know these things can be hard, but then in today’s time, no one should be dependent on one income source.”

“See how you can increase your savings to survive for longer during tough times. Control unwanted expenses for now,” read a comment.
