An old photograph from the 1950s, depicting a parking scene on Bengaluru’s MG Road, has resurfaced on social media, sparking nostalgia among users. Shared by the handle Indian History Pics, the image shows a time when one of the city’s most iconic streets was lined with vintage cars and cycle rickshaws. The caption on X reads, “1950: Car Parking on M.G. Road, Bangalore.” Posted on 15 March, the image has garnered over 22,000 views.

While many admired the charm of old Bengaluru, others debated whether the past was truly better.

Check out the now-viral post here:

The image has reignited discussions about Bengaluru’s transformation, as appreciation for its history clashes with the reality of its rapid modernisation.

One user, reflecting on the city’s quieter days, wrote, “Bengaluru must have been a paradise back then.”

However, not everyone agreed. Another user pointed out the city’s economic progress, saying, “Even though I am a critic myself, times are far better now. Back then, over 75% of people were below the poverty line, unlike now, when almost everyone carries a smartphone.”

Some lamented the impact of urbanisation, particularly the Metro project on MG Road. “Then the government decided to build a Metro line in the middle of it and destroy its beauty,” one user commented, reflecting on how the once-picturesque avenue has changed.

In a similar instance, another vintage image of Bengaluru’s Majestic bus terminal from 1994—taken on a “cloudy morning at 9:05 am”—went viral on social media in January 2025.

In contrast to today’s bustling scene, the photograph depicts the area as significantly quieter, even during peak hours. Over the decades, Majestic has evolved into one of the city’s busiest transit hubs, teeming with residents, migrants and tourists.

The resurfaced image, showing a time when the streets were far less congested, has left many Bengaluru residents feeling nostalgic and reflective.
