The user recounted how a bathroom cleaning service he booked was cancelled after he requested the workers to communicate in Kannada.

A Bengaluru man has alleged that the Urban Company staff cancelled a bathroom cleaning service after he requested them to communicate in Kannada.

In his post on X, the man shared that when two workers arrived at his home, he showed them the bathroom that needed cleaning. However, one of the workers started speaking in a language he didn’t understand. The resident requested, “Kannada, please,” but the conversation continued in an unfamiliar language.

Then the second person started speaking in a language other than Kannada. The user repeated his request, “Kannada, please.” Sensing a communication gap, the workers called someone on the phone who spoke Kannada. But instead of resolving the issue, the call took an unexpected turn as the supervisor on the other end allegedly told him that the workers were uncomfortable because the customer insisted on speaking only Kannada.

Furthermore, he wrote, “I told him, ‘I’ve booked a service, showed them the bathroom—they just need to clean it and leave. Why is language even a barrier here? Surprisingly, the person said it’s difficult for their workers if the customer speaks only Kannada.”

The situation escalated when the workers contacted Urban Company’s customer care, who also said she couldn’t speak Kannada. Frustrated, the man chose not to continue the conversation. After further back and forth, the cleaning staff cancelled the booking and walked away without completing the service.

Baffled by this response, the resident expressed his disappointment, saying, “What I still don’t understand is—why should language even be a barrier for such a straightforward service? And if there is a need for communication, shouldn’t Kannada be the first choice in Karnataka? I remained polite throughout and even said, “Sir, clean maadakke bhashe yaake beku? Banda kelasa mugisikondu hogi.” But their attitude was cold and dismissive.”

“It’s disheartening that speaking Kannada in my own home in Karnataka could lead to service denial. Urban Company, if you’re offering services here, shouldn’t language inclusion be a priority?” he concluded.

Responding to the post, Urban Company said, “Hi, thank you for reaching out to us. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience you faced. We would like to assist you with this matter. May we have your registered mobile number or email address via DM to check this further?”

Urban Company was earlier under fire after it launched the ‘Maid-for-hire’ service. Called ‘Insta Maids,’ this service offered users to access maids within 15 minutes, marking the entry of the company into the quick commerce sector.
