Bengaluru Rains: Accusing Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) of “physical agony and emotional trauma” caused by alleged pathetic and non-motorable roads in the metrolpois, a 43-year-old man has sent a legal notice of Rs 50 lakh to civic body seeking compensation for his trauma.

The man, identified as Dhivya Kiran, a resident of Richmond Town claimed that he has been facing hardships and mental stress on a frequent basis because of lack of basic road infrastructure, reported NDTV.

In the notice, Kiran claimed that he suffered debilitating neck and back pain and because of that, he reported five visits to orthopedic specialists and four trips to the emergency room. He attributed this suffering directly to the “jerks and trauma” endured while commuting on the hazardous roads.

“My client states that he was forced to visit 5 orthopedic specialists due to the intensifying pain. He made 4 emergency visits to St. Philomena’s Hospital, undergoing injections and procedures to relieve acute agony. Further, have been on multiple medications and painkillers to manage the condition,” Advocate K V Laveen, who served the notice on behalf Kiran, said as quoted by the news outlet.

“He has also experienced episodes of crying out in pain, loss of sleep, anxiety, and mental distress, all of which have deeply affected his well-being and daily functioning,” he added.

However, there was no immediate response from the BBMP on the notice.

It is due to BBMP’s “gross negligence and failure in discharging its public duty” that the man is facing “physical agony, emotional trauma, and financial burden”, the notice said.

Seeking physical, financial, and mental agony, Kiran has sought a compensation of Rs 50 lakh within 15 days. Kiran also sought Rs 10,000 as charges for the legal notice issued to BBMP.

Rain-battered roads, riddled with potholes and submerged in water, often turn commutes into a harrowing experience for city dwellers. Following an unusually heavy downpour on Sunday night, the IT capital ground to a halt on Monday, with residents seen wading through floodwaters and even resorting to inflatable boats to evacuate their homes.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘yellow alert’ for Bengaluru until Friday, warning of more moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms. The city remains on edge, once again caught in a cycle of rain, rage, and rescue.

Latha Sridhar, scientist at the IMD Bengaluru, said the city had received 10 cm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. “The last time it rained this heavily was on 18 May 2022. The highest rainfall this season so far has been 15 cm,” she said.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Monday said that the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), which has replaced the BBMP, is working to address the severe waterlogging in parts of the city.
