A Bengaluru man recently shared a hilarious story about his housemate who has social media in stitches, in a typical tale of bachelor lifestyle mistakes. The man used X to share about how his flatmate had turned on the geyser and did not turn it off, leaving it running for four months while they were both travelling to their hometowns.
“Flatmate left the geyser on for four months while both of us had gone to our hometowns,” the man on X posted. Shared on January 22, the post has garnered over 8 lakh views so far. As soon as the post went viral, it received a flurry of amusing comments that caused both worry and laughter. The post soon started an AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on the subject.

During the AMA session, many concerned users enquired about the electricity bill. “For everyone asking about the electricity bill, I haven’t received one since last October. Might need to apply for a loan,” the user replied.
There was one individual who said “I understand that in India, there is a culture of turning off water heaters. In the West, however, we keep them on all the time, and they remain on for years without any problem.” To which, the user replied, “That’s what someone else has highlighted as well.”
Although many found the incident humorous, it also sparked useful conversations about geysers and how they work. Modern water heaters have temperature sensors that automatically turn off the electricity when the water reaches the proper temperature, as several users noted.
“Don’t water heaters these days have temperature sensors and cut off after the water has reached a certain temperature?” an anxious user asked, adding, “In the past, water heaters didn’t have sensors, and the heating coil would stay on, causing the device to overheat and sustain damage.”
Others on X emphasised the dangers of thermostat malfunctions. An individual commented, “Issues can arise when the thermostat wears out or becomes faulty.”
Another stated, “This can lead to breakdowns of the heating element, requiring repairs or even a replacement of the geyser. Better to switch off appliances when not in use for longer periods, such as more than 3 or 4 days.”
In addition to providing entertainment for social media users, the post reminded people to turn off appliances on time.
