Another day, another chapter in the Bengaluru vs. North Indians debate. If you aren’t familiar with the debate, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. This never-ending discussion centres around migration and its contributions to the city’s development. While some argue that this migration has driven the city’s success, others feel it has led to cultural differences. Now, a woman has reigited this debate with her controversial statement that Bengaluru owes its success to North Indians. In a now-viral video, the unidentified woman claimed, “Bengaluru is what it is today because of North Indians”.
The video opens with a man asking a woman, “As a person who has come from Delhi, Chandigarh or whatever, what’s the cultural shock you had in Bengaluru?”
To this, the woman replies, “I don’t know about cultural shock, but people here do hate North Indians. That’s what I observed.”

When asked to provide an example of her experience, she explaines, “I observe people, like they behave differently when they know that we are from the north. Autowallas charging us higher prices and people calling us ‘these Hindi people come from nowhere’. So, we’ve been addressed as ‘Hindi people’ a lot of times.”
She also expresses her mixed feelings about the city, saying, “I love the city… but the fact that they see you as outsiders and they behave differently with you, especially when Bengaluru is what it is because of Notth Indians coming here to a large extent,” adding that people still struggle to accept this reality.

The video, which was shared on social media on December 21, has raked up more than 6.7 lakh views and still counting. Many even flocked to the comments section of the video to share their thoughts.
“Most of the well-established companies or startup founders and employees in Bangalore are from other parts of India. She is not wrong. This should not have been a point of discussion in the first place. Why this unwanted divide in the name of language?? I see local Kannadigas are the ones falling prey to this divisive political since the Karnataka election,” said an individual.
Another added, “Attitude! This is the main reason people call them outsiders and treat them differently, auto wallas charge them move, bhajiwallas as well. A Bihari friend of mine is very humble , has picked up some kannada, interacts in broken kannada, he gets lower prices than me.”
“Everyone has contributed to the growth of the city. Why the hate against north Indians?” asked a third.
A fourth chimed in, “Bengaluru is bengaluru because of North Indians coming here Then why is there is no Bengaluru in north India?”
“So without development North Indians just dropped in to Bangalore. Lol. Bengaluru was already developed even before IT companies. Bollywood movies were shot here on the streets of Bengaluru. Actors have seen 5 star hotels here,” claimed a fifth.
