A couple from Sikkim living in Bengaluru have been arrested for allegedly growing ganja in their balcony garden.
The couple, identified as Sagar Gurung, 37, and his wife Urmila Kumari, 38, had shared videos of their garden on Facebook, which led to their arrest.
According to a report by The Indian Express, the couple, who have been residing in Sadashivanagar’s MSR Nagar for the past two years, is originally from Namchi district in Sikkim.
Sagar runs a small eatery, while Urmila, a homemaker, had recently become quite active on social media. On October 18, while posting a video of their balcony garden featuring nearly two dozen plants, Urmila unintentionally revealed two cannabis saplings, the publication reported.
Soon after the video was shared online and became a topic of discussion among users, the police were alerted and subsequently raided their home on November 5.
During police questioning, the couple did not answer queries about the saplings. However, officers at the scene noticed that two pots had been emptied, indicating that the plants had been quickly removed.
Under pressure during questioning, the couple admitted to growing ganja and showed the police the dustbin where they had disposed of the plants. In total, officers found 17 pots, two of which contained cannabis. The total amount of ganja seized was 54 grams.
The police suspect the couple may have been growing ganja for commercial purposes, based on their attempt to dispose of the evidence when they saw the officers. They also seized Urmila’s phone, which had been used to upload the video.
Further, a case has been filed against the couple under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for allegedly attempting to cultivate cannabis for sale.
