A routine auto ride in Bengaluru took an emotional turn when an HR professional discovered that the driver had once been an IT associate who had switched careers to make a living. In a LinkedIn post, Gayatri Gopakumar shared that the auto driver, Surendra R, happened to overhear her work conversation and gently asked, “Ma’am, are you in HR? Could you possibly help me find a job?” What seemed like a casual question was filled with emotion, reflecting years of hard work, setbacks and determination.

Intrigued, Gayatri decided to learn more. She soon discovered that Surendra had an impressive professional history, having served as a Senior Associate and Quality Analyst at companies like Calpion Software Technologies and OSPROSYS. He had led projects, managed teams, and was well-regarded for his ability to work autonomously.

“He has led projects, managed teams, and has been recognised by his managers for his ability to handle responsibilities independently,” Gayatri mentioned in her post.

But fate had other plans. A stroke, triggered during a gruelling winter journey, coupled with a sudden medical emergency in his family, forced Surendra to step away from the professional world he had built over the years.

With no safety net or financial backup, he had no choice but to reinvent himself. Swapping office meetings for meter readings, he began driving an auto-rickshaw—not out of defeat, but out of sheer determination to support his loved ones and stay afloat during one of life’s harshest chapters.

“Unfortunately, due to unexpected health setbacks and personal challenges, including a stroke triggered by travel during winter, and the emotional strain following a family medical crisis, Surendra had to step away from the corporate world,” Gayatri added.

She went on to say that without a solid financial foundation, Surendra turned to auto-driving as a means to keep his family going and cover day-to-day expenses. But now, he’s ready for a second chance.

“He’s eager to make a comeback—whether it’s in Quality Assurance, Operations Support, or any backend role aligned with his skills and experience,” Gayatri shared. She encouraged her professional network to step forward and help him restart his career, even including his photo and contact information to aid the effort.

Posted just a few days ago, the story quickly gained traction, drawing over 120 likes and a flurry of comments. People across social media chimed in, offering their support, encouragement, and reflections in the comments section.

A user said, “Kudos to you for sharing this and going the extra mile.”

Another added, “All the best to him. He deserves a good role.”

“God bless you, madam… For such a lovely initiative,” an individual wrote on LinkedIn.

“Such a lovely initiative!” another remarked.

Sometimes, a single conversation—and the bravery to voice a hope—can be enough to change the course of one’s journey.
