In yet another alarming taxi scam in Bengaluru, a woman ended up paying Rs 3,000 for what was initially supposed to be a ₹450 ride. Adding to her ordeal, she was made to pay for toll and fuel but still didn’t reach her destination as promised. After finally making it safely to her PG, the woman shared her harrowing experience online.

The woman landed at Bengaluru airport around 10:30 pm and initially planned to take a bus to her PG. However, she later reconsidered and decided to either walk to the bus stand or book an Ola cab to her PG.

“While walking to the bus stand at the airport, a friendly man approached me, offering to drop me directly at my PG for just Rs 450. I was sceptical, but he explained that he was in a hurry to drop his friend and head home to KR Puram, which was close to my PG. He even showed me an app with his ride history and assured me this was common,” she recounted on Reddit.

Although the woman was initially hesitant, she agreed to the ride after the man persistently insisted and requested. Her hesitation stemmed from the fact that the bus fare was approximately Rs 350, making it unlikely for a cab to charge less.

After she agreed, another man arrived to pick up both her and the initial driver. “Another guy showed up with a car, and the first man sat in the front seat. Shortly after the ride, they asked me to pay the toll fee of Rs 200. I noticed they took a quiet route that felt scary. They tried to keep things friendly, talking in Hindi, and asking about where I was from, and what I did for work. But then they started blasting loud music, shouting along and abusing other vehicles on the road,” the woman added.

She continued, “At one point, they stopped for cigarettes and tea and asked if I wanted anything. I declined, feeling very uncomfortable. Then they stopped at a petrol pump and forced me to pay RS 300 for fuel. I was scared and paid, hoping they’d just take me to my destination.”

Things escalated further when the duo began smoking inside the car and even used drugs. “Eventually, they stopped at a deserted spot where another man was waiting. The driver claimed his ‘friend’ would take over from there because he had to go somewhere else. They asked me an OTP for what they claimed was from a ‘cab app’ and showed me a bill of Rs 3,000. They started shouting when I argued and saying the Rs 450 was just the booking fee.”

The situation worsened when one of the men snatched her phone and deleted his contact number, which she had saved earlier after sharing her drop location via WhatsApp.

The woman said that when a new Uber cab arrived at the scene, she was still 15 kilometers away from her destination.

“The men transferred my trolley bag into this car and insisted I get in. I was still scared but noticed the Uber driver seemed genuine. The Uber driver was nice and dropped me at my PG safely but I have to pay the bill again as it was not prepaid,” she further shared.

The woman concluded, “This was terrifying, and I feel lucky to have gotten out unharmed.”
