Bangladesh Judges: The interim government of Bangladesh on Sunday (January 5) announced the cancellation of the judicial training program planned in India. Under this program, on 10 February next month, 50 Bangladeshi judges and judicial officers were to receive training at the National Judicial Academy of India located in Madhya Pradesh. The decision was confirmed by the Law Ministry of Bangladesh, although no detailed information was given about the reasons for the cancellation. According to local reports, this decision has been taken under the instructions of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh.
Under the programme, 50 judges from Bangladesh were to go to India to participate in a one-day training programme. District and Sessions Judges, Additional District and Sessions Judges, Joint District Judges, Senior Assistant Judges and Assistant Judges were included in these training campaigns. The entire expense of this program was to be borne by the Indian Government.
Reason for canceling the program
Although no specific reason was given in the notification regarding the program, according to reports it was done under the direction of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. The increasing tension between India and Bangladesh in recent months is also being seen as a possible reason behind this decision.
Reason for tension in relations between India and Bangladesh
In 2024, student-led protests in Bangladesh led to the fall of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s 16-year-old government, following which Hasina took refuge in India. This political instability caused tension in the relations between India and Bangladesh, as India was a key ally of the Hasina government. Relations between the two countries have increased further since the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus came to power.
Increasing tension between India and Bangladesh
India has expressed its concern over the attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh since the interim government of Mohammad Yunus came to power. Many Hindu places of worship and communities have been attacked, which has further widened the gap between the two countries. India had also recently expressed its displeasure over the arrest of a Hindu monk and his denial of bail. India has been continuously sharing its concerns with Dhaka regarding the increasing communal tension in Bangladesh and attacks on the Hindu community. After these incidents, tension in the relations between the two countries has increased further.
What does the cancellation of the Judicial Training Program mean?
The cancellation of the judicial training program indicates growing tension between India and Bangladesh. The two countries have historically had complex relations, and the decision signals that Bangladesh’s interim government is changing its political direction, particularly by distancing itself from India.
Impact on judiciary and bilateral cooperation
Such training programs are seen as a means to share legal expertise between the two countries and strengthen bilateral cooperation. Cancellation of this program by Bangladesh may impact judicial exchanges and other collaborative efforts between the two countries.
