Welcome to Country Australia: The Australian government has come under scrutiny over its spending spree as records revealed that almost half a million dollars was spent on “Welcome to Country” celebrations over two financial years. According to Sky News report, opposition spokesperson James Stevens has said that taxpayers’ money has been spent on 300 functions in 21 government departments. According to James Stevens, the government has spent $452,953 between 2022 and 2024.
What is welcome to country?
Welcome to Country is a formal ceremony held in Australia. During this festival people celebrate with their village, clan or group. During this time, a person living away from the village is recognized by his tribe and people dance and sing. Traditional smoking ceremonies are also organised. The government also spends money for this function.
What are the complaints of the opposition?
The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet spent $41,801 on 33 ceremonies, while the Australian Institute of Sport allocated $47,003, and the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) spent $60,342. On average, each ceremony cost about $1,266 and lasted five to 15 minutes. Opposition spokesman James Stevens criticized the expense, arguing that welcome to country ceremonies have their place, but taxpayers should not bear such a financial burden.
“Spending millions on welcoming ceremonies does not solve the challenges facing Indigenous Australians,” Stevens said. National leader David Littleproud echoed these sentiments, describing the spending as ‘unaccountable’ and suggesting that celebrations should be reserved for major cultural or international events.
