Australian Test captain Pat Cummins will undergo scans on Monday to check the extent of his back injury, reports in Australia said, the result of which will decide his participation in the upcoming Ashes.
Cummins did not bowl in the second innings of Australia’s third Test against the West Indies in July as his team bowled the Windies out for 27 in the fourth innings, thanks to a six-wicket haul from Mitchell Starc and a hat-trick from Scott Boland.
The skipper might not be fit for Australia’s white-ball tours preceding the Ashes, with reports also suggesting that he migh be a doubt for the first Test at Perth.
Cummins is expected to miss the three-match T20I series in New Zealand and the visit of India for three ODIs and five T20Is.
Steve Smith will most likely step in as captain if Cummins is ruled out of the first Test. The batter had done so during the 2021-22 Ashes as well, after Cummins was ruled out of the Adelaide Test with COVID-19.
