Weeks after Myanmar was rocked by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that killed over 3,500 people, an astrologer was arrested for causing panic with a viral prediction of another quake.
John Moe The, on April 9, shared a TikTok video claiming that a major earthquake would strike every city in Myanmar on April 21. In the viral video, the astrologer was seen urging people to “evacuate buildings” along with their important belongings as soon as they feel tremors.
Authorities moved swiftly, arresting Moe The on charges of making “false statements with the intention of causing public panic,” as said by Myanmar’s information ministry. His now-deleted TikTok account, which had over 3 lakh followers, featured predictions based on astrology and palmistry. His arrest came amid widespread fear, with many residents taking his warning seriously, even abandoning their homes in anticipation of the predicted quake.
“We got a tip-off about fake news being spread through a TikTok account that a severe earthquake will hit. Action will be taken effectively against him according to the law. Likewise, we will also take action effectively against those who write or spread or share fake news,” said the authorities.
According to seismologists and experts, earthquakes can never be predicted as they depend on many complex factors. Listening to the astrologer’s prediction, many left their houses and camped outside on April 21, a resident of Yangon shared with the AFP.
John Moe The was arrested at his home in Sagaing, central Myanmar, during a raid, as per the BBC.
The recent earthquake that hit Myanmar on March 28 caused widespread destruction in the Mandalay and Sagaing regions. It led the government to make a rare appeal for international assistance. Due to its high magnitude, the tremors were even felt in Thailand, located almost 1,000 kilometres away. The tremors wreaked havoc at a construction site in Bangkok, killing as many as dozens of workers. Even some regions in China and India felt the shaking.
