When the police arrived at the house in Jyotikuchi, they discovered a woman’s skeleton lying on a bed.

When the mother wasn’t seen for several days, the neighbours grew concerned.

If you have watched the Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho, you would probably be dreading the protagonist Norman Bates who kept his dead mother preserved in the fruit cellar for years. The macabre detail featured in the film takes a real-life twist closer back home in the state of Assam as a young man has been found to do the same. In a disturbing case from Guwahati, Assam, a man, Jaideep Dev, kept his deceased mother’s body at home for three months without performing her last rites.

His mother, Purnima Dev, passed away, but instead of arranging her funeral, Jaideep reportedly continued his daily routine, even bringing food for her as if she were still alive. He also went to the bank regularly to withdraw money. The strange behaviour raised the suspicions of his neighbours, who eventually alerted the police.

When the police arrived at the house in Jyotikuchi, they discovered a woman’s skeleton lying on a bed. The deceased was identified as 40-year-old Jaideep’s mother, Purnima Dev. Investigations revealed that Purnima had been living with Jaideep after her husband’s death, who was a retired railway officer. Purnima had a good relationship with her neighbours, but when she hadn’t been seen for several days, the neighbours grew concerned.

Adding to their worry, the house was locked, and garbage had accumulated around it. When neighbours questioned Jaideep about his mother and asked him to clean the premises, he shockingly revealed that both his father and mother had died. However, he refused to clean the house until he found help. His unusual response led the neighbours to immediately inform the authorities. Upon inspection, the police discovered the shocking reality inside the house, leading to widespread attention as the incident went viral.

The ongoing investigation has revealed that Jaideep may have suffered from mental health issues. He reportedly kept his mother, Purnima Dev, confined to their home for years and did not allow her to go outside. Following her death, Jaideep did not perform her last rites and continued living with her body, possibly believing that she could somehow return to life.

Jaideep had no job, relying solely on his mother’s pension for financial support. Neighbours initially assumed he was bringing food for both himself and his mother, unaware of the reality. One neighbour, Joysingh, voiced his concerns, wondering if Jaideep truly didn’t know the importance of performing his mother’s last rites.

The fact that Jaideep hid the truth about his mother’s death for three months has left many puzzled. During the police search of the house, they found religious items near the skeleton, including a picture of Lord Shiva, dub grass, a lamp, and food offerings. Jaideep also revealed that he chanted the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” daily. Authorities speculate that he may have believed, through his chanting of the Mrityunjaya mantra, that his mother could be resurrected or live forever.
