As global markets continue to fluctuate, US President Donald Trump has shifted his focus to a domestic concern, urging Congress to end the biannual clock changes.

Amidst global financial uncertainty, US President Donald Trump has turned his focus to a domestic issue affecting millions of Americans: daylight saving time. Taking a break from economic discussions on Friday, Trump urged Congress to make daylight saving time permanent. “The House and Senate should push hard for more daylight at the end of the day,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Very popular and, most importantly, no more changing of the clocks — a big inconvenience and, for our government, a VERY COSTLY EVENT,” he added.
The suggestion comes as the Senate Commerce Committee revisits proposals aimed at eliminating the twice-a-year ritual of adjusting clocks. Supporters argue it would help reduce confusion, improve productivity and give Americans more daylight in the evenings.
However, the debate remains split, with lawmakers and experts weighing the benefits of preserving brighter mornings versus enjoying longer daylight in the evening.
According to the Daily Beast, one industry that stands to benefit from the proposed change is golf. With more sunlight in the evening, courses could stay open longer – a possibility that hasn’t gone unnoticed. The sport’s advocates have been quietly pushing for a permanent shift to daylight saving.
On the other side of the argument, health professionals and sleep experts caution that darker mornings could disrupt people’s circadian rhythms and make it harder to get quality rest.
“I personally struggle with the two choices here because it’s a question of what you care about more: sunshine and joy and fun and money, or health, mental health, physical health. And the honest answer for most people, gosh, I care about all that stuff,” said Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Cruz.
Some lawmakers are concerned about how a nationwide change might affect different regions differently.
“Hoosiers would begin their day in darkness for much of winter. What works for East Coast states, I’m hearing from many of my constituents, may not work for states like Indiana,” said Sen. Todd Young, according to Politico. “A one-size-fits-all national policy of time changes doesn’t take into account the regional differences that significantly impact daily life,” he added.
Public opinion, however, leans heavily towards ending the clock-changing ritual. A November 2021 Economist/YouGov poll showed that 63 per cent of Americans would prefer to do away with the practice. Only 16 per cent wanted to keep things as they are.
As discussions continue, one thing is clear: Americans are ready for a decision on how their days begin and end.
