Karishma Mehta, Humans of Bombay founder and CEO, marked the New Year with a very thoughtful action. Mehta, who has over 2.8 million followers on Instagram, revealed how she is approaching the motion “leather free for life” from 2025. She is giving up animal-based products in order to promote a sustainable lifestyle. Her initiative is believed to do good to the animal welfare organisations worldwide.

Taking to her Instagram handle, Karishma Mehta dropped an inspirational post revealing that she has decided to sell all her luxury leather goods. The Mumbai-based entrepreneur posted photos of herself posing with an array of shoes and bags from luxurious brands such as Gucci, Prada, Yves Saint Lauren (YSL), Louis Vuitton, and Fendi, among others. Alongside it, she wrote a long note, mentioning how growing up, she bookmarked many such “dream bags” and “dream shoes”, which were part of her “big dreams”.

However, it was very recently that she realised that “terms of materialism rests on a fundamentally flawed premise.” Thus, she decided to stop any such further purchase of luxury leather items and sell all of her previous possessions, the proceeds of which will go towards animal welfare NGOs.

Supporting her decision, she said in the post, “As a vegetarian, I won’t eat meat because it doesn’t sit right with me to consume a living being. How then can it sit well with me to partake in a market that prides itself on being “luxury” by levying their premium-ness on the quality of animals being skinned? It doesn’t.”

The Humans of Bombay CEO concluded by saying, “I hope this little action opens your eyes to it- dream still, think of conquering your biggest dream still- relentlessly, equivocal. But do it with heart, do it with kindness. Here’s to a kinder 2025 & being leather free for life :).”

Karishma Mehta began the Humans of Bombay Facebook page in 2014, taking inspiration from American Photographer Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York Facebook page. Gradually, the page’s popularity expanded, and even in other parts of the country. By 2021, the Humans of Bombay’s Facebook and Instagram pages gained over millions of followers. The following year, she launched an interview-based YouTube web series titled How The Hell Did I Do It?

Over the years, she has interviewed a number of celebrities, including industrialists, politicians and more. The list of notable figures even includes Prime Minister Narendra Modi and industrialist Ratan Tata. Sharing a gratitude-filled post for all the conversations over the years, she made an Instagram post, sharing candid moments with remarkable personalities. “Some of our interviews through the years; our body of work represents the relentlessness with which the team operates everyday. A billion stories yet to tell & miles to go before we’re anywhere near resting!” read her side note.

Last year, Mehta was even embroiled in a controversy after a failed attempt to sue another page named People of India for copyright issues. The CEO of Humans of Bombay, however, faced brutal trolling, and her work was called out for plagiarism. In a separate post, Mehta declared that she never shied away from crediting her company’s New York counterpart for the idea.
