Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s government once again in Sri Lanka, ruling coalition has majority in parliamentary elections


Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election : Voting for parliamentary elections took place in Sri Lanka on Thursday (14 November). Today i.e. Friday (15 November) the counting of votes received in the elections is going on. In the trends of vote counting so far, the ruling coalition National People’s Power (NPP) led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake seems to be moving towards the majority figures.

NPP got more than 62 percent votes

According to the trends revealed so far on Friday, NPP has so far received 62% i.e. more than 44 lakh votes in the elections. NPP has so far won 35 seats out of total 196 seats. At the same time, the main opposition party SJB is in the race with 18 percent votes and 8 seats.

At the same time, the National Democratic Front supported by former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has got less than 5 percent votes. National Democratic Front has so far won only 1 seat. Whereas the Rajapaksa family party, which has shown its influence in Sri Lankan politics, Sri Lanka People’s Front (SLPP) remains at the fourth position by securing two seats.

113 seats needed for majority in Sri Lanka

It is noteworthy that there are 225 seats in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. In which a figure of 113 seats is required to achieve majority. At the same time, President Dissanayake’s alliance seems to be moving towards majority in this election. At present, President Dissanayake’s party has only 3 MPs in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. According to local media reports, Dissanayake may get absolute majority in this election.

Elections were last held in Sri Lanka in 2020

The last parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka were held in the month of August 2020. After which elections were to be held in Sri Lanka next year in 2025. But in September this year, Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the presidential election and dissolved the Parliament. After which parliamentary elections were announced in Sri Lanka only in 2024.
