India-Bangladesh News: Mahfooz Alam, working as an ‘adviser’ to the interim government of Bangladesh, created a controversy by giving a controversial statement against India on the occasion of Victory Day on 16 December 1971. Vijay Diwas marks the victory of the Bangladeshi Army over the Pakistani Army in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. On the same day, Mahfooz posted an objectionable post against India on social media.
In the post, Mahfooz Alam tried to incite cultural discontent in Northeast and Northern India. Along with this, a controversial map was released, in which West Bengal, Assam and Tripura were shown as part of Bangladesh. After the controversy escalated, Mahfouz deleted his post.
Mahfuj Alam, special aide to Dr. #Yunus and Advisor of Interim Govt made a Facebook post this morning in which he talked of annexing some of India’s eastern and northeastern territories (see the map shared by him).

Attempt to destabilize Northeast India
Mahfooz Alam claimed in his post that the culture of the people of North-East India and Bangladesh is similar, irrespective of religion. He also alleged that East Pakistan was created because of the attitude of India’s upper castes and ‘Hindu fundamentalists’. In his post, Mahfouz expressed the need to repeat the events of 1975 and 2024.
Reference to 1975 and 2024
In 1975, Bangladesh’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family members were assassinated. Mahfouz termed the alleged plan to remove Sheikh Hasina from power in 2024 as undemocratic. He said that there is a gap of 50 years between these incidents, but the circumstances have not changed. Mahfouz claimed that Bangladesh needs a new system and geography.
Controversial map and threatening talks
Mahfouz shared a controversial map on Facebook, which showed India’s West Bengal, Tripura and Assam as part of Bangladesh. He said Bangladesh is still in its “quest for liberation” and this is just the beginning. However, just hours after sharing the dream of capturing India, he quietly deleted the post.
Mahfooz Alam’s background and controversies
Mahfouz Alam is a hardline Islamist leader who served as a minister-level advisor in the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus. In the presence of former US President Bill Clinton, Yunus described Mahfouz as the mastermind of a ‘carefully designed’ operation to remove Hasina from power.
Mahfouz, who left the university in 2016, calls himself a student leader. His statements and activities clearly show his intention to incite anti-India sentiments and support radical Islam.
