Amidst the war in the Middle East, 8 Muslim countries came under one roof, know what is D8 Summit?

D8 summit: A meeting of D-8 (D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation), an organization of developing Muslim countries, is being held in Egypt from Thursday (19 December). Eight countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Türkiye, Iran will participate in this meeting. Apart from economic issues, there is a possibility of discussion on issues related to Palestine and Israel in the meeting. Especially, there is speculation about bringing a resolution on Israel’s aggression after the Syrian coup.

D-8 organization was formed in 1997 for the economic progress of Muslim countries. It does not include Arab countries like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Qatar and UAE. The D-8 organization includes the following eight Muslim countries:

  • Pakistan
  • bangladesh
  • Indonesia
  • malaysia
  • Nigeria
  • Egypt
  • Turkey
  • iran

    Importance of D-8
The total population of these countries is about 1.25 billion, which is 60% of the global Muslim population. The primary agenda of the organization is economic progress, but now social issues have also been included in it. This time Iran’s President Masoud Pejeshkian is attending the meeting. This is the first visit of an Iranian leader to Egypt in the last decade, which is considered important.

History of Iran-Egypt relations
Tension between the two countries increased after the Islamic Revolution of the 1970s. Egypt kept talking about development, while Iran moved towards radicalism. Last year, Egypt mediated during the war between Hamas and Israel, which improved relations between the two countries. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has mentioned regional issues in the possible agenda of the meeting. This is leading to speculation that D-8 countries may consider bringing a resolution against Israel.

Possible decisions can be taken against Israel

  • Weakening economic ties with Israel.
  • Putting pressure on international forums.
  • Isolating Israel at the diplomatic level.

Strength of D-8 countries
D-8 countries are important from strategic and economic point of view. Iran and Nigeria, included in this organization, have oil reserves. Apart from this, Turkey and Iran are strategically important for West Asia and Europe. Pakistan and Bangladesh are famous for their big market and manpower. Because of this, D-8 has shown its strength in a short time. However, this time he is also considering taking strong steps against Israel.

Other organizations of Muslim countries
Apart from D-8, many other organizations of Muslim countries are also active, which are as follows.

  • Islamic Development Bank: This bank based in Saudi Arabia focuses on economic cooperation.
  • Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC): A group of more than 50 Muslim countries.
