The altercation escalated quickly and witnesses say the CEO of First American Financial threatened to kill the cruise passenger during the attack.
The ship’s captain asked Kenneth DeGiorgio to stay in his cabin.
A heated altercation erupted aboard a Virgin Voyages cruise involving Kenneth DeGiorgio, CEO of First American Financial, after a dispute over footwear turned violent. The incident reportedly began when DeGiorgio’s wife, Nichol DeGiorgio, requested a fellow passenger, identified as MA, to wear shoes while dancing in the cocktail lounge. In response, MA allegedly insulted her with an expletive-laden remark, sparking a confrontation.
According to reports, DeGiorgio reacted by approaching MA and grabbing him by the neck. Witnesses claim the CEO also issued a death threat during the altercation. Security footage captured the struggle, showing MA attempting to maintain his balance while being choked.
A police complaint states that MA told authorities he felt as though his “throat was going to be ripped out” during the attack. A bartender on board alerted security, leading to an official intervention.
DeGiorgio’s legal team dismissed the allegations, stating that he acted in defence of his wife, who felt threatened. Despite being charged with assault under US maritime law, he was released but could face up to a year in prison if convicted. The ship’s captain ordered DeGiorgio to remain in his cabin until the vessel reached the next port, where he was taken into custody.
In a statement Kenneth’s legal team dismissed the allegations and said, “Mr DeGiorgio responded to the actions of an individual who harassed his wife, making her feel threatened and intimidated. Although charged with a simple misdemeanour, Mr DeGiorgio looks forward to being absolved of any wrongdoing.”
The ship’s captain decided that Kenneth DeGiorgio should stay in his cabin until the ship reached the next port. DeGiorgio was then taken into custody and charged with assault under US maritime law. He was released, but if the court finds him guilty, the Los Angeles resident could be sent to prison for at least one year.
