
Turkey crisis: After Bangladesh, now the threat of coup has started looming in the Turkis. In fact, Istanbul Mayor Acrem Imamoglu was formally arrested and sent to jail on Sunday (23, March 2025), which raged a wave of protests across the country. Imamoglu has been accused of corruption and running criminal organizations.

Istanbul mayor Acrem Imamoglu has been charged several serious allegations, including: bribery and forced recovery, rigging in the bidding process and illegal data collection, running a criminal organization, however, allegations related to terrorism have been rejected.
What does the opposition say?
The Republican People’s Party (CHP) claims that this arrest is inspired by politics. Imamoglu was considered the strongest candidate to challenge Erdogan in the 2028 presidential elections. His supporters say that the government wants to remove him from the election race.
Government cleaning
The Turkish government and the judiciary have denied political intervention. Officials say that the court took a decision independently and strict action on corruption was necessary.
Nationwide protest continues
After the arrest of Imamoglu, protests erupted in the major cities of the Turki – Industanbul, Ankara and Izmi. The police used tear gas, water cannon and plastic tablets for riot control. The protesters did stone pelting and fireworks in response. The government called it “terror on roads” and warned of strict action.
CHP strong opposition
CHP launched the ‘solidarity vote’ campaign in support of Imamoglu. Non-members were also motivated to vote all over the country. CHP leader Kemal Kilikdaroglu said, “This is not only a matter of one person, but an attack on democracy in the Turkis.”
Effect on economy
Turkish Lira recorded a huge decline. Turkish benchmark Bist 100 index fell 8%. Investors say that this political instability may cause a deep setback to the Turki economy. Imamoglu had warned before his arrest that this action would affect the Turk’s international reputation and the trust of investors.
Are Erdogan afraid of Imamoglu?
Please tell that Imamoglu gave a strong blow to Erdogan’s party by winning the election of the post of Istanbul Mayor in 2019. The election was re -voted after the allegations of rigging in the election and Imamoglu won by even more margin. His popularity makes him the strongest candidate for the 2028 presidential elections. In 2022, he was convicted of insulting the Turkish Election Council. Recently his university degree was canceled, which is considered a conspiracy to stop him from contesting the presidential election.
