Emily Calandrelli, an aerospace engineer and TV host, made history by becoming the 100th woman to travel to space on November 22, 2024. She boarded a Blue Origin spacecraft, made by the space company owned by Jeff Bezos. In the video shared by Emily, her genuine and emotional reaction gazing out of the spacecraft window left viewers delighted. Emily shared that one of the most meaningful items she carried with her to space was her father’s West Virginia University college ring, through which, she honoured her father.
In the YouTube video, she said, “As I watched the Earth fall below me I thought of all of my family and friends who helped get me here and the words from my dad’s letter were replaying in my head, ‘When you board the new Shepard capsule, you won’t just be carrying my ring into the stars, you also be carrying my dreams, my heart and all my love with you’.”
Emily Calandrelli’s video showed everything from her astronaut training to the special moments on the flight, launched from the West Texas desert. It also included her experiencing weightlessness and seeing Earth from space for the first time.
She said, “Unlike the rockets used by Neil Armstrong and Sally Ride, the rocket we’ll be flying in is fully autonomous and 99% reusable. This means, there are no spacecraft pilots on board and the entire rocket will be autonomously launched into space and autonomously landed back down on Earth. We’re flying in the new Shepard Rocket named after the first American in space, Alan Shepherd, who flew a similar flight trajectory as our flight. We’re the ns28 mission, the ninth human flight for Blue Origin and finally the 11th launch of this exact rocket.”
Emily Calandrelli explained that she and the team were getting custom made astronaut seats designed to fit them perfectly. This was important because, in an emergency, the capsule might separate from the rocket at a very high speed, causing their bodies to experience extreme pressure. If the seat wasn’t properly adjusted, it could be very uncomfortable. Each seat had a five point harness and they practiced getting in and out of it.
The video also captured Calandrelli looking anxious as the New Shepard spacecraft was getting launched from West Texas. However, her nervousness quickly faded once the mission smoothly left Earth’s atmosphere. The moment she entered space, she was filled with excitement and amazement. Seeing Earth from above was an unforgettable experience and she couldn’t hide her emotions as she floated in zero gravity.
