A video posted by a cosmetic surgery clinic in Shanghai has sparked widespread criticism online. The viral clip, shared on Instagram by Dr Zhe, who runs the Shanghai Plastic Surgery clinic, shows dozens of women in hospital gowns sitting in a waiting area after surgery. Most of them have visible bandages on their noses and chins, basically recovering from cosmetic procedures.

The caption on the video simply said, “for beautiful woman.” But many viewers found the image disturbing rather than inspiring. The video has been watched over three million times and brought a flood of comments where many questioned the price paid for beauty.

One user wrote, “So this is called beauty?”

Another comment described the scene as “a scene from a horror movie.”

A third user said, “Please don’t try to satisfy society by destroying our own body.”

“Insane really, this sort of pressure to look perfect is not good for any society, each of us have our inherent uniqueness which can be enhanced with face yoga and meditation and deep breathing, why go under the knife, god has made us perfect we just need to accept ourselves or else we live an uneasy life,” read a comment.

The backlash mainly targeted the clinic’s focus on achieving the so-called “baby face” look. This beauty ideal is popular in parts of East Asia and involves a small, delicate chin, large eyes and a youthful appearance. Dr Zhe’s social media is filled with before-and-after videos showing dramatic facial changes. His account has over eighty thousand followers.

While it’s completely normal to care about how one looks, problems begin when appearance becomes the only thing a person focuses on. In recent years, many experts have warned that chasing a certain look can lead to serious health issues, both physically and mentally.

One such case that grabbed attention last year was that of Zhou Chuna, a young woman from China. She was just 18 but had already gone through more than a hundred cosmetic procedures in her effort to look like her favourite celebrity, Chinese actress Esther Yu. Her transformation journey began when she was only 13 years old with eyelid surgery.

Over the next few years, she kept going back for more. Zhou ended up having ten surgeries just on her eyelids, along with several bone shaving procedures. The treatments, funded by her parents, reportedly cost over Rs 4.6 crore.

What started as a desire to enhance her appearance soon became something much more serious. Zhou struggled with anxiety and low self-esteem. Eventually, Zhou stopped going to school and focused only on changing how she looked.
