Apple and Meta: Facebook and Instagram parent company Mata has been fined 200 million euros (about Rs 1947 crore) and Apple 500 million euros (about Rs 4866 crore). The fine has been imposed by the antitrust regulators of the European Union. They have been found violating the Digital Markets Act (DMA).
Action taken after one year long investigation
For the last one year, it was under investigation whether these companies follow the Digital Markets Act or not? The purpose of this rule is to make the entry of small companies easier by controlling the dominance of large companies in the market and maintains competitiveness in the digital market of Europe. This fine by the European Union is likely to increase tension with US President Donald Trump, already announced tariffs on other countries in the interest of American companies.
Apple will challenge the fine
The iPhone maker Apple has said to challenge this fine. While Meta has criticized this, the European Commission is trying to disrupt successful American businesses, while Chinese and European companies are allowing them to work under different standards. Meta further said, it is not just about fine, but the commission is forcing us to change our business model.
What is the charge on them?
Apple is alleged to have not given so much freedom to the app developers present in the app store that they can give direct information about cheap deal or discount or other offers to users from outside. That is, they have to work under Apple’s rules.
Due to this, these developers are not able to use the all -adultical app distribution channel on iOS and even if they do, they have to pay Apple’s core technology fees. At the same time, Meta has been fined for the pay-or-concentrate model. Under this, Facebook and Instagram users give consent for free service so that the advisors can show ad for their revenue.
