A woman in southern China has turned heads online after posting a video of herself indulging in hotpot — but not just any hotpot.
The lavish meal was cooked in a gold pot weighing 1 kg and worth a staggering 700,000 yuan (around Rs 84 lakh). The extravagant dining experience quickly went viral, sparking a flurry of reactions across social media.
The woman, who operates two gold wholesale shops in Shuibei, Shenzhen’s famed gold and jewellery hub, revealed that the shimmering pot was a custom order, according to a report in South China Morning Post. It was made at a factory owned by a friend.
While gold jewellery is a common order in her business, she added this was the first time she had seen an entire cooking pot made from the precious metal.
The woman said that before making the video, she took permission for the same from the client. Only after she got approval, did she record the video to showcase this one-of-a-kind product before it was delivered to the buyer.
However, she had no idea what the client planned to do with the extravagant piece.
As for the cooking experience, she said that the gold pot heated up quickly due to its superior conductivity, but it did not make any change to the flavour of the food in any way.
Speaking to Chinese media outlet Dute News, the woman said that the price of the pot was determined based on the current gold rates and processing charges.
Social media buzzed with reactions to the gold cookware, with many questioning its practicality, with one user terming it as “rich people’s wild ideas.”
One user speculated about whether the gold could melt “a little on the cooker.” while others joked that even the water boiled in it might smell of money.
Concerns over cleaning also surfaced, as one user trying to figure out what would happen if “food sticks in the pot.” The person added, “I would not even dare to use a scrubbing sponge to clean it,” according to SCMP.
Adding to the humour, one individual shared a photo of their own golden bowl and chopsticks, hinting at joining the extravagant meal.
