The mass shooting incident that took place in a skyscraper building located in central Manhattan on Monday has left many shocked. The accused, 27-year-old Shane Tamura, died from a self-inflicted injury after killing at least four people in open fire.

Employees working in the skyscraper at the time of the incident made frantic efforts to escape and protect themselves. Among the many remarkable stories of courage was one from the Blackstone office. Chilling images circulating on social media revealed how employees worked together to build a makeshift barricade in a desperate attempt to prevent the attacker from entering their workspace. They gathered and stacked office furniture, including sofas, desks, chairs, and even computers, against the door to form a blockade.

This quickly growing pile of furniture formed a makeshift barricade that reached nearly to the ceiling, effectively blocking access to the room and providing a vital line of defence.

The skyscraper houses several prominent organisations, including offices for the National Football League (NFL) and KPMG, a leading auditor firm. The surrounding area is a bustling business district, known for its concentration of five-star hotels and prestigious office buildings. Importantly, this section of Manhattan also includes the headquarters of the United Nations.

According toCNNCCTV footage showed that the suspect was armed with an M4 assault rifle during the attack. Witnesses reported seeing him dressed in a sport coat and button-down shirt. Various reports have identified the suspect as Shane Tamura, a former high school football player. It has also been reported that he struggled with mental health issues. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that Tamura had recently been dismissed from his position as a security guard at a Las Vegas casino.

Tamura entered the building at approximately 6:30 pm and took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where a real estate management company is located. He killed four people since entering the skyscraper. After some time there, he returned to the hallway and took his own life, according to police reports.

Authorities found a letter in Tamura’s possession expressing grievances with the NFL and their handling of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). He also requested that his brain be studied. “Terry Long football gave me CTE and it caused me to drink a gallon of antifreeze,” Tamura wrote, as reported by CNN. Terry Long, a former Pittsburgh Steeler, died by suicide in 2006 after suffering from CTE.
