Most people follow the weekly calendar without giving much thought to the order of the days. But according to Rajya Sabha MP and BJP leader Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi, the sequence has its roots in Vedic astrology, which offers a traditional explanation for why the days are arranged the way they are.
According to Dr. Trivedi, everyone follows a seven-day week—Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and so on. He says if there is a clear reason behind this order, it should be explained. He adds that Sunday coming first makes sense because the Sun is the biggest celestial body. But some people question why only seven planets are considered, even though there are nine.
In a video, Dr. Trivedi explains that the Sun, being the largest celestial body, naturally claims the first position—hence, Sunday starts the week. However, he also addresses the common query: if size determined the sequence, should not the second-largest planet, Jupiter, come next, making Thursday follow Sunday? Similarly, Saturn, the third-largest, should follow Thursday.

Trivedi provides an intriguing explanation rooted in Vedic astrology for why Sunday is the first day of the week and why the days follow their specific order. According to Dr. Trivedi, the logic behind the sequence of days can be traced back to the concept of ‘Time‘ in Vedic astrology, which refers to a division of time. He said that the Greek word ‘horoscope’ comes from the word ‘time‘, which means hour.
According to the system of Timeif the first time of the week starts with the Sun, then the first time of the next day — the 25th hour — will belong to the Moon. The day after that, the first time will be of Mars. This pattern continues, with the first time of the fourth day being ruled by Mercury, followed by Jupiter the next day. This sequence continues, determining the ruling planet of each day’s first hour.
Based on this system, the order of Time calculation in Vedic astrology begins with the Sun, followed by the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. The days of the week—Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday—correspond to this sequence.
Dr. Sudhanshu Trivedi explains that when pandit ji recites the Navagraha shanti mantra during rituals at home, most people have heard: “Om brahma maurri tripurantakari bhanuḥ Shashi bhūmisuto budhaścha, guruścha shukraḥ Shani rahuketavaḥ sarve grahāḥ shānikara bhavantu.” If one observes the order of planets in this mantra—Bhanu (Sun), Shashi (Moon), Būmisuta (son of Earth, i.e., Mars), followed by Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu—it mirrors the sequence of weekdays: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and so on.
