Hotmail founder Sabeer Bhatia has started a nationwide discussion, raising questions about the direction in which India is heading socially and economically. He pointed out that people were focusing too much on religion and regional background, instead of recognising individual talent and hard work.

Bhatia also expressed doubts on whether India’s much-talked-about economic growth was truly making life better for common people or just giving the appearance of progress. He shared on X (formerly Twitter) that a big issue in India is how people are seen by their religion or region first, not as individuals.

“The fundamental problem in India: we see each other first as members of a religion or region—Hindu, Muslim, Tamil, Punjabi—before we see the individual,” Bhatia wrote on X. “Until we shift this mindset and celebrate individual identity and freedom, real progress will remain out of reach,” he added in his post.

Posted on June 18, Bhatia’s post on X has gathered over 24,000 views so far and sparked a range of reactions in the comments.

A user responded, “I think a better way of putting it is, we are Indians first and everything else later. But unfortunately, that’s not how it is.”

Another commenter said, “This used to be the case decades ago and one thought with generational changes, this mindset would change. Unfortunately, since this regime came to power, they have made matters worse than it was decades ago.”

Someone else shared, “We should celebrate our universal identity. Focusing on individual identity often ties us to cults, religions, or specific narratives.”

Meanwhile, another user offered a different view, writing, “I think it’s not a problem, it is an advantage. Other countries mostly hv one language to offer to the world. However, India has variety, the world can pick which ever they like. Of late I noticed global influencers picking their choices. there are cons too, have to deal with it.”

According to reports, Bhatia’s comments came after several podcast appearances where he shared a gloomy view of India’s innovation scene. He said that a deep fear of failure, along with the pressure to choose traditional career paths, held back young Indians from thinking freely or taking bold, creative steps.
