The Air India Flight AI-171 plane crash in Ahmedabad shook the entire nation. Over 260 people lost their lives in the tragic incident. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner had crashed within seconds after takeoff. Amid the ongoing backlash against the airline, former Jet Airways CEO Sanjiv Kapoor has come forward to defend Air India.

Kapoor’s reaction came in response to a deleted tweet where a woman demanded a ban on the airline. He urged the public to view the incident in the right context.

Kapoor, who has worked in the industry for quite some time now, also hailed Air India’s “stellar safety record” over the years.

“Amazing! Tens, even hundreds of thousands, are killed in road & rail accidents each year in India, 2,000+ a year on Mumbai’s suburban rail alone, and people don’t bat an eyelid. Air India has had a stellar safety record for decades, one tragedy and people lose all sense of perspective,” he tweeted.

The post instantly sparked a debate, with many appearing unconvinced by Sanjay Kapoor’s viewpoint.

A user wrote, “An accident cannot be justified by referring to another accident. Reacting to a comment from a woman shows the absence of empathy and emotional resilience. Many of us are shocked to see such incidents.”

When a person referred to the 2020 crash of Air India Express flight 1344, Kapoor replied, “AIX is a separate AOP and airline. It is a separate airline with a separate fleet, AOP, management, staff, mission, and history. You cannot conflate the two.”

A user questioned whether Kapoor was normalising the plane crash, to which he explained, “What I am saying is keep a sense of perspective. Saying “Shut the airline down” for an airline with zero fatalities in 40 years while accepting mass casualties year after year in other forms of transport is madness.”

Air India Crash: Update

Air India has cancelled 83 flights since June 12, of which 66 involved Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

The London-bound AI-171 struck a hostel complex shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. There were 230 passengers and 12 crew members on board, including nationals from India, Portugal, the UK, and Canada. Among those who lost their lives were not just the passengers but also staff, medical students, and locals.
