Travelling by train is often a pleasant experience, but for one passenger on the Patalkot Express, it quickly turned into a frustrating ordeal. A Reddit user recently posted about their distressing journey in the AC coach, where a large family completely disrupted the atmosphere.
In a post titled “Earlier I used to defend Indians… but today I’ve lost all hope,” the user described how they and their mother had reserved seats in the AC coach, only to find a big family already occupying them. Although the family moved without argument when politely asked, what happened next left the user shocked.
The group, about 25-30 members including 8-9 children, appeared to be travelling to a wedding. The Redditor called them “a rich Sindhi family” with flashy gold chains and branded clothes, occupying seats across three adjacent coupes.
The first hour was manageable, but chaos soon erupted. A girl began applying mehendi to others, while kids ran around screaming loudly. The family brought two large boxes filled with cold drinks, fruits, and snacks. Their loud, animated chatter included phrases like: “Jijaji, thepla lo!” “Oreo biscuits kidhar hai!” “Mehendi wali baith ja zara!”
The kids behaved like “mini hurricanes with no off switch,” as the user put it.
After lunch, the noise intensified when the family pulled out a speaker and started playing tambola loudly, calling out numbers “like it was a wedding sangeet.” The user, losing patience, filed a complaint on Rail Madad.
Railway officials arrived at the next station and politely asked the family to reduce the noise. Instead, the group reportedly became louder and retaliated by singing bhajans, playing cards, and mocking the complainant with remarks like, “Aur karo complaint!”
Calling it the “worst travel experience” of their life, the user said that even their unreserved sleeper journeys during college felt more peaceful.
The Redditor expressed disappointment with the family’s behaviour, describing them as “educated, well-dressed, rich, but absolutely zero class or civic sense.”
The post ended with the user saying they used to defend Indian travellers abroad but now have “lost all hope.”
Take a look at the post here:
In the comment section, fellow Redditors slammed the reckless behaviour by the family.
One user commented, “Third class etiquette in first class travel.”
Another said, “Please stop thinking money = manners.”
“Just because they are rich, it doesn’t mean they have etiquette,” someone else said.
A person suggested, “When in such a situation, make a video of them and make it public. And shame them. If not using your own account, then a camouflage one.”
One pointed out the positive side, saying, “On bright side of things, at least the officials came upon complaining, I don’t expect even this from our system.”
Last year, an Indian traveller in Finland spoke out against other Indians for their “lack of civil sense.” He shared his frustration about a noisy Indian family on a quiet train.
