A 19-year-old student from Bihar posted on Reddit about his effort to learn Kannada before starting college in Bengaluru, and the heartfelt message quickly went viral. His sincere excitement and respectful attitude struck a chord with many people, especially amid rising language-related tensions in the city.
Fluent in Hindi and English, and familiar with Bhojpuri and Sanskrit, the student shared his strong love for all Indian languages and expressed a desire to learn Kannada to truly feel part of the community, not just as a visitor.
“I’ve always felt like every Indian language belongs to me just as much as Hindi does — whether it’s Bengali, Odia, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Kannada… they all feel like a part of me. And now that life’s giving me the chance to live in Karnataka for 4+ years, I really want to connect with Kannada in a real, meaningful way,” the student wrote on Reddit.
He said he prefers to learn Kannada in a sincere and gradual way, avoiding shortcuts. He’s also excited to dive into classical Kannada literature, particularly the works of Madhvacharya and Purandara Dasa.
“So I wanted to ask you people: how do I start learning Kannada in a deep and pure way — not like crash courses or just tourist-style phrases, but actually absorbing the language slowly and respectfully, like it’s my own?” he added in his post.
Take a look at his post here:
Posted on June 1, the student’s message has gained over 80 upvotes and a wave of support on Reddit. Many users shared helpful tips for learning Kannada, like starting with simple phrases, watching Kannada content on YouTube, and chatting casually with classmates. Others recommended using college language support programs to make learning smoother.
A user advised, “Learn a few everyday words and phrases as time goes by. By the time you’re out of college, you’ll have some knowledge without dedicated learning. After that, if you’re job keeps you here, then think about learning properly. Many companies provide classes in-house as well (that’s how I learned to speak). My mother tongue is not Hindi.”
Another wrote, “Make friends with locals and they will teach you a little bit.”
“As you are coming to study, don’t fret about it. You’ll pick up Kannada by interacting with your classmates. It will be easier as a student compared to being an employee. You’ll make friends and learn,” a person commented on Reddit.
“By speaking to people. If you don’t understand something, ask people, and that’s the best way. People come out of their way to welcome you and encourage you learning Kannada,” another individual remarked.
In addition, some users shared links to Kannada YouTube channels and recommended beginning with basic phrases to get started.
