Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis pointed out that designing a new drug usually takes several years but with the help of AI, this process could be shortened to just a few weeks.

Artificial intelligence is already changing the way we live and work. Now, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis says it could completely change healthcare too. In a recent interview, he said AI might even help end all diseases within the next 10 years. Hassabis recently spoke about this future during an interview with CBS’ 60 Minutes. He spoke about how far human health has come with the help of technology and how artificial intelligence is poised to take it even further.
“On average, it takes 10 years and billions of dollars to design just one drug. We can maybe reduce that down from years to maybe months or maybe even weeks. Which sounds incredible today, but that’s also what people used to think about protein structures. And it would revolutionise human health, and I think one day maybe we can cure all diseases with the help of AI,” he said.
The idea that AI could shorten drug development from years to mere weeks left the interviewer surprised who asked if he was seriously suggesting the possibility of ending all diseases. Hassabis stood by his words and added, “I think that’s within reach. Maybe within the next decade or so, I don’t see why not.”
The bold claim by the CEO gained significant traction online. Among those reacting was Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, who shared a clip from the interview and showed strong support for Hassabis. “Demis is a genius and he should be given all the resources in the world to make this happen,” he wrote on X.
During the interview, Hassabis also mentioned that artificial general intelligence or AGI (AI systems with human-like thinking abilities) could be just five to ten years away. But he made it clear that today’s AI is still far from being conscious. While the technology has come a long way, it still has its limits.
“They’re still the kind of, you can still think of them as the average of all the human knowledge that’s out there. That’s what they’ve learned. They still can’t really yet go beyond asking a new novel question or a new novel conjecture or coming up with a new hypothesis that has not been thought of before,” he said.
Hassabis along with his colleague John Jumper developed an AI model that was able to decode the structure of proteins. For this achievement, the duo was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2024.
