A woman has come under severe criticism after posting a video of her child doing his homework and looking very upset. The video on Instagram has provoked fury across social media after the mother recorded her son complaining of breathing difficulties and dismissed his suffering as “nautanki (drama).”

The boy is telling his mother that he is having trouble breathing. The boy looks nervous and almost bursts into tears while working on his homework.

Instead of comforting him, the woman is heard saying, “You were breathing fine while playing earlier.” In response, the little child says, “Meri saans atak atak ke chal rahi hai (I’m unable to breathe properly).”

In the video, the child also explains he had similar troubles when playing outside. The mother posted the video online with the caption, “nautanki (drama),” seemingly thinking he was pretending to avoid doing his homework.

Take a look at the video here:

Shared on February 3, the video has racked up over 11 million views so far. The woman’s attempt at comedy was unsuccessful. She was criticised on the internet for trivialising what appeared to be a moment of distress for the kid.

Instead of assisting, social media people criticised her for recording and sharing the incident. The video sparked strong reactions, particularly from mental health specialists and concerned parents.

A user said, “This is not nautanki. He is experiencing anxiety.”

Another commented, “When you prioritise audience engagement over your own child’s vulnerability, you just lose as a parent. But don’t you worry, children grow up and complete the human cycle. He will walk all over you to cater to content like you are doing right now.”

“This is Anxiety! What kind of bad parenting is this?! Horrible,” an individual wrote.

“Maybe rethink your methods of teaching the child. This is just soooo sad. Why scare him to such an extent that he resorts to this?” another remarked.

The internet saw the video as a reminder that children’s feelings aren’t content, even though the woman may have meant it to be humorous.

Many found the clip more about the pressing need for empathy in parenting than it was about being funny.
