A man recently posted on Reddit asking other non-resident Indians (NRIs) how to fill the emptiness he feels after moving from India to the United States. According to the 32-year-old man, despite earning a “good amount of money,” moving to the USA has left him with a “big void” in his life. He wondered, “How to cope with the loss of identity after shifting abroad?” Several NRIs found resonance in his post and gave him advice on how to maximise his time in America.

“I feel like I have lost my identity by shifting here. It’s so far from India that I can’t even go without spending a lot of leaves,” the man on Reddit began his lengthy post with. He went on to say that he ended his relationship because of his move and that he currently has no time for dating.

“I broke off my relationship since I shifted here and don’t want to invest time in dating now. I don’t have much social circle locally as I am not living in the West Coast where all my college friends are,” the Reddit post reads.

The man goes on to say that he tried taking vacations, but when he returned, he fell back into the same mindset. “I feel I have lost my identity since coming here since all my happy memories are in India. I have tried taking vacations but after coming back from vacations I sink into the same mindset,” the post further claims.

He went on to ask fellow NRIs for advice. “How do I cope with all this? Can fellow NRIs provide some guidance on this, as people back home don’t understand this, as they think I am living the dream life?” the Reddit post ends.

Shared on April 12, the post has garnered over 30 upvotes. Social media users were quick to respond to the post and offer their thoughts on it.

A user posted, “Haha! I’m going through a very similar transition. The way I look at it is you will have to let go of your old self and accept things that are very different now. Rebuild your identity. It’s a great opportunity to outgrow your old self.”

Another commented, “Hit the gym, develop a hobby which need you to be outdoor, find out local meet up groups to join activities together. An effort for social interaction outside of work should get you kick started your new life here. Positive mindset to re-establish your life is the only way to improve how you feel.”

“I love your take on this. I too have only been here slightly over a couple of years and have been putting myself out there by initiating conversations at the gym and asking people about their interests if they play a sport and if they would be interested in playing a sport that we both like. I have also been trying to have lunch with my colleagues at work instead of eating by myself. One has to put in the effort or it’s gonna be tough,” an individual wrote.
