IPL 2025: Royal Challengers Bangalore And The Curse Of M Chinnaswamy Stadium – News18

Last Updated:

Royal Challengers Bangalore have lost two matches out of five in IPL 2025 so far. Both the losses for RCB came in their own backyard – M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore.

Is M Chinnaswamy Stadium really cursed for Royal Challengers Bangalore?

Royal Challengers Bangalore have a new record to their name as the ghost of M Chinnaswamy Stadium is back to haunt them. As it turns out, RCB have now clocked in as many as 45 losses at the Bengaluru cricket stadium, the most for any team at a given venue. The roaring chants, the constant backing, the sea of red standing in unison in the stands – nothing seems to be working in RCB’s favour. When the home side took on Delhi Capitals on Thursday evening, it seemed like RCB would finally break the home curse when DC found themselves struggling at 58 for 4 at one stage. A masterclass inning by KL Rahul, who hammered an unbeaten 93* off 53, helped DC get to the RCB target of 164 with ease and breeze. M Chinnaswamy Stadium was back in the conversation and fans were upset but mostly baffled. But why?

RCB – Away Bullies

Royal Challengers Bangalore have played five matches in the IPL 2025 thus far. Unsurprisingly, their three victories have come in away homes. Rajat Patidar’s side first upset Kolkata Knight Riders in the inaugural match of the Indian Premier League played at the iconic Eden Gardens. There, RCB won by 7 wickets in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. In their next contest, they battered the mighty Chennai Super Kings, defeating the Men in Yellow at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in their backyard. Chasing RCB’s target of 197, CSK abruptly folded for 146/8 in their designated 20 overs. RCB’s next triumph was against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium, where the visiting team notched up an impressive 221. The hosts could only muster up 209 in response, falling short by mere 12 runs.

Home – Disadvantage

The only two losses registered by Royal Challengers Bangalore (at the time of writing this) came at home – M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Clashing with the Gujarat Titans on April 2, RCB batted first and posted a score of 169/8. A brisk 73 off 39 by Jos Buttler and 49 by GT opener Sai Sudharsan upset the hosts by 8 wickets and 12 deliveries to spare. In RCB’s most recent match, Delhi Capitals emerged victorious on the back of stunning KL show that silenced the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. It’s worth stating that RCB were put in to bat first, in both the losing causes where they lost the toss as well.

M Chinnaswamy Stadium

It’s not all bad, though. In fact, RCB do have some decent seasons at home. For instance, in 2011 season of IPL, the Bangalore side registered five triumphs at home, losing only one. This was also the season where Royal Challengers Bangalore made it to the finals only to lose the last encounter to Chennai Super Kings. A couple of years later in 2013, RCB finished fifth on the points table. They won 7 out of 8 encounters at home turf.

Still, M Chinnaswamy Stadium also happens to be RCB’s nemesis.

“Interestingly, they have lost games where the opposition comes and scores over 200 runs and now they have lost a game where they have only made 160. Last two times they have played there, they have made 165-170. Now they are losing games at 170. It’s a huge thing. It’s not that it’s happened over one year or two years. Can they just say forget it this game never happened? We’re good enough, come back and win,” Harsha Bhogle told Cricbuzz after RCB’s loss to DC on Thursday.

A report in Sponne called M Chinnaswamy Stadium a “bowlers’ nightmare” while highlighting the pitch, altitude, short boundaries as the contributing factors playing against the home side.

Rewinding all the way back to the inception of IPL, it was year 2008 and RCB played 7 matches at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. The franchise could only bring one match home as they lost six encounters at the venue.

Fans Hypothesise

Psychological rut? Toss loss? Weak batting? Below-par bowling? Even the loyalists who have backed the trophy-less franchise all these years cannot wrap their heads around as to what goes horribly wrong at home.

“We fight against 10 teams, one being Chinnaswamy,” remarked an RCB fan on Reddit.
