Ravidas is one of the poet-saints of the Bhakti movement during the 15th to 16th centuries CE. He taught the removal of social divisions of caste and gender and promoted unity in the pursuit of personal spiritual freedom. Recently, one of his followers gained attention as he chose to remain barefoot for the rest of his life. According to reports, Fakir Chand Das, a resident of Chaugain village in Bankey Bazar block of Gaya district, always remains barefoot. It does not matter to him whether it is winter or summer, paved road or unpaved road. He has been walking barefoot for the last 50 years. If any time he wears it, as soon as he regains consciousness, he takes off all his shoes and slippers.
Fakir Chand Das is a leader and social worker and has contested assembly elections several times in the last 25 years. He was initially in Congress for years, has changed sides from several parties, and is now in RJD.
Apart from contesting Bodh Gaya assembly elections on a Congress ticket, he has contested elections from Imamganj twice as an independent and as a JAP candidate in 2020. Fakir Chand Das has been a district councillor since 2001.
Talking to Local 18, Fakir Chand Das says that he is religious, and due to his religious nature, he does not wear shoes or slippers. He also said that he is a descendant of Saint Ravidas.
Saint Ravidas’s devotees used to make others wear shoes and slippers but did not wear them themselves. Fakir Chand says that he believes in the principles of Saint Ravidas and Bhim Rao Ambedkar. “Since I have gained consciousness, I have vowed not to wear shoes and slippers; I have pledged to spend my entire life without shoes and slippers. He said that in those days many people did not have shoes and slippers on their feet. Many people were not able to wear them due to lack of money,” he said.
Fakir Das also said that his faith is so deep that he does not miss any puja or prayer. He takes part in all the pujas and rituals held throughout the year. He has vowed not to wear shoes or slippers throughout his life so that no living creature gets injured by being crushed by his feet.
“Just like Lord Rama went to exile barefoot. Even sages and saints used to walk barefoot. Similarly, I have also resolved that I will not wear shoes or slippers throughout my life,” he added.
