A security guard at L&T Powai was beaten up allegedly by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers. The security guard, as reports suggest, got into an argument with a Marathi-speaking person. However, he did not know Marathi, which led to MNS workers beating him up.

The incident comes a month after a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus conductor was allegedly assaulted after an altercation with two students for speaking in Kannada, not Marathi. The incident, which took place in Karnataka’s Belagavi village, escalated into an inter-state dispute with the suspension of bus services between Karnataka and Maharashtra.

Last year, MNS workers had beaten up a chemist in Pune’s Dhanori area for allegedly “insulting” the Marathi language. A video of the incident had gone viral on social media.

A video, which was widely circulated, showed a chemist, who is not from Maharashtra, previously “insulting” Marathi by refusing to speak the language. In the video, the chemist questions, “Is it written anywhere that one must speak compulsorily in Marathi?” The people in the video respond by warning the chemist of potential consequences for his refusal.

According to local reports, two days after this incident, MNS workers barged into his shop and severely beat him up. They even threw ink on his face and asked him to apologise for “insulting” the Marathi language.
