An unsettling story has emerged from the Sirmaur Assembly constituency in Rewa district of Madhya Pradesh, touching the hearts of many. While societal neglect of the elderly is increasingly common, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) RK Sinha demonstrated an extraordinary act of human compassion that went beyond his administrative duties.
The Plight Of An Elderly Couple
Srinivas Dwivedi and his wife, in their advanced years, found themselves abandoned by their two sons, Vinod and Vijay, at a time when they needed them the most. For two years, the couple struggled without any maintenance.
In October 2023, they appealed for justice at the SDM office. Although orders had been issued previously, the sons had ignored them.
A Beacon Of Hope
When the complaint resurfaced recently, the SDM summoned both sons. Seeing the elderly father in a torn dhoti and the mother in a worn saree, the SDM promptly wrote to the police, ordering the sons to appear in court and warning them of imprisonment if they failed to provide maintenance. This stern warning had an immediate effect, prompting the sons to present cheques of Rs 28,000 each, with a promise to pay the remaining amount by March 31.
As justice was served, tears filled the eyes of the elderly father, who expressed his gratitude to the SDM with folded hands. The SDM honoured Srinivas with a new dhoti-kurta and a coconut, while his wife received a sari.
This story highlights the silent suffering and occasional touch of compassion experienced by many elderly people across the country, abandoned by their own children. Often, their destiny lies in old age homes or wandering from door to door.
However, initiatives like that of RK Sinha in Sirmaur provide a glimmer of hope, illuminating lives shrouded in darkness.
