The Indian men’s cricket team triumphed over New Zealand on Sunday to win the ICC Champions Trophy for a historic third time. As the nation erupted in joy, a family in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria was struck by tragedy.

Fourteen-year-old Priyanshi, a Class 8 student, suffered a fatal heart attack while watching the match with her family. They had enjoyed New Zealand’s innings, but tragedy struck when India began batting.

Rumours quickly circulated, suggesting that Priyanshi’s death was linked to Virat Kohli’s early dismissal after scoring just a single run. However, her father, Ajay Pandey, clarified after her funeral that this was not true.

Pandey explained that he was away from home when the incident occurred. Having watched New Zealand’s innings, he had gone to the market. He received a phone call informing him of Priyanshi collapsing and rushed back home to take her to the hospital. She was later pronounced dead.

He firmly stated that his daughter’s death was unrelated to Virat Kohli’s wicket and was a tragic coincidence.

Despite media reports suggesting Priyanshi died from shock after Kohli’s dismissal, her family refuted these claims. They emphasised that the team was performing well when the tragedy occurred, and Virat Kohli had not even come in to bat when Priyanshi collapsed.
