The release of Netflix’s lifestyle series With Love, Meghan, featuring Meghan Markle alongside her “friends old and new, ” landed her in many troubles. She faced intense backlash with critics, and even her estranged family members who are questioning her portrayal of a modest upbringing. Amid all this, one of the former allies of the Duchess of Sussex is now speaking out against her.
Katherine Ryan, once an ardent supporter of Meghan, has had a change of heart and is not afraid to admit it. The Canadian comedian, writer and TV personality, who is known for her biting humour and candid takes on public figures, accused the Duchess of Sussex of lying about her past.
Following the release of Meghan’s show on the streaming giant, Katherine appeared on the podcast Telling Everybody Everything and shared her thoughts on it. “I liked Meghan Markle. I was rooting for Meghan Markle,” admitted Katherine, adding, “Though she is very Hollywood — even for me — and I don’t like that in people.”
What caught the 41-year-old comedian’s attention was that there were inconsistencies in Meghan’s personal anecdotes. “Maybe it’s just the projects she’s choosing, it does feel like she has lied about whether she knew who Prince Harry was,” she noted. “These details about her childhood change and don’t add up,” Katherine added.
While pointing out a contradiction in the Duchess of Sussex’s storytelling, the comedian shared that in the new show, she said that she “ate TV dinners growing up.” But, in a past interview, Meghan said quite the opposite thing. Pointing out the inconsistency, Katherine said, “In an old interview, she was like, ‘We would eat farm fresh.’ Her whole act just seems very manicured and very forced.”
Despite the criticism, the comedian clarified that she does not think the Suits actress is a “bad person.” However, she does think that the Duchess enjoys the perks of fame. Katherine said that Meghan likes “cosying up to celebrities, and she wants the hundred-million-dollar deal, and she likes the fact that she’s married to a prince.”
Sharing her thoughts on the renewal of the lifestyle series for a second season despite the immense criticism, the comedian thinks people have been “hate-watching” With Love, Meghan. “Who knows what Netflix are doing?” said Katherine, before adding, “They are smart — whether they love something or hate something, whatever keeps them watching more episodes.”
With Love, Meghan, released on March 4, was renewed for a second season within just three days of its premiere.
