A bird in New Zealand has become the internet’s latest sensation after making an unexpected appearance on a highway camera. The video, shared by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) on Facebook, quickly caught the attention of social media users and sparked some light-hearted amusement. In the 11-second footage, a black and yellow myna bird lands in front of a highway camera monitoring traffic near Auckland. The bird squawks aggressively at the camera, seemingly giving an intimidating stare. It then flies off, but clearly the bird isn’t done as it returns moments later for another look.

The NZTA couldn’t resist putting a playful twist on the situation and shared a caption with their post: “Wishing a great week ahead to everyone except this bird brain that needs to myna its own business.”

They then highlighted the myna bird’s disruptive nature: “The myna bird is a pest in New Zealand – it’s aggressive towards our native birds, destroying their nests, eating native fruit, and taking over other birds’ territory.” “So this definitely wasn’t a welcome cameo on our cameras,” the agency quipped.

The caption further mentioned that the bird’s appearance had blocked the view for a short time. “We monitor motorways 24 hours a day, seven days a week, though a myna annoyance like this can make the roads a bit tricky to see. Thankfully the myna didn’t stick around long and our bird’s eye view of the road was soon restored,” NZTA wrote.

The post quickly gained traction online, with the comment section filled with a wide range of reactions. Many, just like the NZTA, couldn’t help but add their own humour to the situation.

One user joked, “Train a bird to cover all cameras to get away with road offenses.”

Another quipped, “Protesting about new speed cameras I guess?”

“You wanted a bird’s eye view, you got it, the little bird said be careful humans what you wish for,” someone else added.

Another humourously remarked, “He just wanted 16 mins of fame and to talk to us.”

More lively comments continued to pour in with one user commenting, “He can probably see himself looking at the camera. He may think it is another bird in his territory.”

One noted, “They are a pest but they are so intelligent. They are great mimics!”

And finally, an individual came with another amusing comment that read, “He is flirting with the camera.”
