A police academy in Japan has enlisted beauty consultants to train its male officers in makeup application, according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP). In January, 60 police cadets—including those nearing graduation—began a makeup course at Fukushimaken Keisatsugakko, a police academy in Fukushima Prefecture. The initiative quickly gained attention online.
The training covered fundamental beauty techniques, such as applying primers, moisturising the skin, using eyebrow pencils, styling hair, and trimming eyebrows. To ensure a professional approach, the academy also collaborated with Shiseido, a renowned Japanese cosmetics brand.
According to Takeshi Sugiura, the police academy’s vice-principal, police officers should always keep a clean and professional appearance because they interact with different members of the community regularly. “We want to remind students that as both members of society and future police officers, maintaining a proper appearance is crucial,” Sugiura said during an interview with Nippon TV, a Japanese television station.
“I have never worn make-up before. I believe that being a police officer means often being in the public eye, so I want to ensure that I present myself well before going to work,” one of the male cadets who participated in the training said.
There was a flurry of reactions on Japanese social media when the course was introduced in different academies, with some making fun of the move and others applauding it.
A user said, “Now they can throw loose powder into the suspects’ eyes to catch them!”
Another commented, “This may seem absurd, but isn’t it a good idea for both men and women to take the make-up course?”
Japanese police academies have traditionally focused on providing cadets with legal and physical training. However, the introduction of innovative courses is seen as an effort to foster more courteous interactions with the public.
In addition to Fukushima, a similar program has been implemented at a police academy in Yamaguchi, where male cadets are even taught proper facial cleansing techniques.
