A woman from Kerala has expressed concerns regarding Uber India’s privacy settings after she claims that an Uber driver sent her “creepy” WhatsApp messages. In a furious post on X (previously Twitter), Smriti Kannan criticised Uber and included pictures of the conversations she allegedly received from the driver. Uber has responded to the incident, stating that they have revoked driver’s access to the platform.
The screenshots show that the driver sent her a WhatsApp message to remind her about a prior ride in Kochi. He asked about the perfume she wore when Smriti Kannan asked him why he was messaging. In response to the uninvited approach, the woman blocked the driver and criticised Uber India for its privacy practices.
“WHAT THE F**K @Uber_India how bad are your privacy settings? An Uber driver messages me on WhatsApp and asks me creepy questions. Seriously how safe are women???” Smriti Kannan captioned her post after sharing screenshots of the conversation on X.
Uber, in a statement to News18.com, confirmed that the driver had violated its community guidelines and, as a result, had been debarred from the platform.
“Phone numbers for riders and drivers are anonymized on all Uber trips and the number can not be accessed through the Uber platform. In this case, the driver accessed the rider’s number through the UPI app used for payment. Uber strictly prohibits post-trip contact, and as this violates our community guidelines, the driver’s access to our platform has been revoked.” Uber spokesperson said.

Shared on February 11, the post has garnered over 1.3 million views. Many people questioned the cab aggregator’s privacy standards and how the driver obtained the number after the post garnered attention.
A user wrote, “That’s absolutely unacceptable. Passenger privacy and safety should be non-negotiable. @Uber_India needs to address this immediately, enforce stricter policies, and ensure such breaches never happen. Women’s safety isn’t optional—it’s a fundamental right.”
Another commented, “Please file a police complaint. This is sick.”
“@Uber_India has hired maximum creeps. I have stopped using it. It’s almost like they have reservations for perverts in their company,” a user on X said.
“It is so disturbing. These drivers know our locations too,” another user remarked.
Earlier, Tanya Sharma, a lawyer from Delhi, criticised Uber after a driver sent her offensive messages not long after she made a taxi booking. She posted screenshots of the messages on LinkedIn, which went viral. She called the encounter “traumatic” and expressed grave concerns about women’s safety.
Further in her post, Tanya Sharma asked how these kinds of things could happen in one of Delhi’s “poshest areas,” as she put it. She stated that she immediately cancelled the booking and filed a complaint against the driver.
