A video of a woman’s obscene act in front of the historic Rebecca Monument in Bogotá, Colombia, has sparked outrage on social media. According to Mirror, the unidentified woman was seen touching the breasts of the statue. She then dropped her pants and relieved herself in front of it.
The act has been described as deeply disrespectful, especially as the statue is a tribute to Spanish Jews.
At one point in the video, a man is seen rushing toward the woman with a jacket in his hands. However, she simply grins at him and continues her actions. The footage has triggered a wave of criticism from the public.
A resident commented, “Total lack of education and culture.” Another person said, “What a disgusting scene, how disrespectful.”
The Rebecca Monument was installed in Bogotá in 1926 and sits in the middle of a city pond. The statue, made of white marble, depicts a partially naked woman carrying a bowl and a jug of water.
According to Daily Star, the monument was created by Colombian artist Hernando Henao Buriticá. It is said to be inspired by La Rebecca, a French sculpture by Raoul Vernet.
The statue has cultural and historical significance, making the woman’s actions even more offensive to locals.
Tourists and Disrespectful Acts
This was not the first time tourists and visitors showed disrespect toward historic sites. In 2023, Cambodian conservationists raised concerns over visitors at Angkor Wat. Some tourists were seen racing around the ancient ruins, imitating stunts from the popular video game Temple Run. Their reckless behaviour risked damaging the nearly 900-year-old structure.
Incidents like these have led to calls for stricter measures to protect cultural monuments. Many believe increased surveillance and fines could help prevent such disrespectful acts in the future.
