What would you do with a fortune in jewellery? For one teenage girl in Shanghai, China, the answer was unexpected. She reportedly sold it for pocket change, all to buy lip studs and earrings. The shocking incident, which has left social media buzzing, took place when a woman surnamed Wang discovered that her daughter, Li, had unknowingly traded away a staggering one million yuan (Rs 1.16 Crore) worth of jewellery for a mere 60 yuan (Rs 680). The ordeal began when Wang realised her expensive collection including jade bracelets, necklaces and other gemstone pieces, had vanished. After searching, she discovered the truth that her daughter had sold them for next to nothing at a jade recycling shop in a local market.
Alarmed, Wang reported the case to the Wanli police station of Putuo Public Security Bureau. Investigators soon pieced together the story. Li caught up in what authorities described as a phase of “adolescent rebellion,” had taken the valuables to fund a small but personally significant purchase, body jewellery, reports the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
A viral video on Chinese social media apps also showed the stolen items, leaving viewers stunned that someone could part with such treasures for so little.
Li’s explanation? She had no idea the jewellery was real. “I had no idea why she wanted to sell it. She said she needed money that day. When I asked how much, she told me, ‘60 yuan (Rs 680)’,” Wang recounted to the police.
Confused, she pressed further. “I asked why, and she said, ‘I saw someone with lip studs and I thought they looked great. I wanted one too,”‘ she added. Li explained that a lip stud cost around 30 yuan (Rs 340) and the shop offered an extra pair of earrings for another 30 yuan (Rs 340), bringing her total to 60 yuan (Rs 680).
The authorities wasted no time. Reviewing surveillance footage and coordinating with market management, they tracked down the missing jewellery. “The shop owner was out that day, so we contacted them by phone and arranged for them to come to the police station for further coordination,” police officer Fan Gaojie told SCMP.
Fortunately, the jewellery was recovered and returned to Wang. As soon as the story hit the Internet, it ignited a heated debate among internet users. Some questioned the parents’ role, while others saw the girl’s actions as a sign of deeper issues. A user pointed out: “If the family owns a million yuan worth of jewellery, why not give the child some pocket money?”
“A teenage girl selling jewellery for 60 yuan to get lip studs is something parents need to reflect on. With such wealth, could they not spare some pocket money?” Another echoed the sentiment. But not everyone was sympathetic. “Giving minors pocket money to get lip studs? As a college student, I cannot support that,” wrote one commenter.
