Some Indian men came under fire after a video of them clicking pictures with a Vietnamese woman went viral on social media. The footage was dropped on Instagram by a page named Vietnam Local Adventure. It mainly highlighted an age-old custom of the country where local women, dressed in the traditional ‘Ao Dai’ attire, take photographs with tourists to commemorate the Lunar New Year. “They do this with the hope that the coming year will bring them health, beauty, and grace, just like the Ao Dai they wear,” the post added.
The clip opened with a man, supposedly from India, capturing a selfie with a woman wearing the Ao Dai. Some other tourists could be seen patiently waiting in a queue for their turn. One showed a thumbs-up to the Vietnamese woman who responded with a heartfelt smile. The other visitors also politely expressed their gratitude to her.
The woman then posed for the camera while holding the “Quat tay” (Vietnamese hand fan made with palm leaves). “Many foreigners visiting Vietnam are impressed by the beauty of Vietnamese women in their traditional Ao Dai,” read a text displayed on the video.
After the post surfaced on Instagram, many viewers pointed fingers at the Indian tourists and made derogatory remarks about them. One of them commented, “Indian men embarrassing India everywhere.” Another user claimed, “Indians pose next to any foreign woman they see.”
An individual said, “Stereotypes don’t emerge out of nowhere. Indian men and their parasocial behaviour around women.” As the comment section was flooded with disrespectful remarks about the Indian tourists, a group of countrymen came to their support.
“When foreigners do the same with Indian women in saree, you praise them for appreciating the culture. But when Indians do this, you go mad. Grow up,” wrote a user. Echoing the same sentiment, another wondered, “They are being very respectful, not touching the girl, waiting for their turn and saying thank you afterwards. So I don’t know why people are hating them.”
Drawing attention to the negative comments, a person sarcastically said, “Racism at its peak. If they were white instead of brown, all would be saying ‘wow’.” “Other foreigners do the same thing when they see traditional people in Japan. But if a brown person, mainly Indian, does, then it’s bad,” explained another. The video has collected more than 3.7 lakh views on Instagram.
