The man discovered the hidden basement while cleaning the house, only to find the former landlord maintaining illegal residency.

In a strange and even creepier experience, a man found his former landlord secretly living in the basement of his house for the past seven years. Surnamed Li, the man who lives in the Jiangsu province in eastern China, purchased a second-hand home for nearly 2 million yuan (over Rs 2.24 crore) back in 2018 from the landlord surname Zhang. His family was extremely happy with the new purchase, considering the home had convenient transportation and extensive renovations.
However, their excitement was only short-lived as Li eventually stumbled upon a hidden door behind the staircase while cleaning, only to notice a basement that he did not know while purchasing the home. According to a South China Morning Post report, the underground space was large and fully equipped with an adequate ventilation system, lighting and even a small bar, However, Li was “creeped out” at the moment when he discovered signs of someone living there, prompting him to contact the previous owner.
As Lee accused Zhang of deliberately hiding the basement while selling the house, the latter argued that the basement was never included in the sale agreement or in the listing and that it was her personal recreational space. “If the basement belongs to you, where am I supposed to relax in my free time?” she added. Lee, who had paid the full price of the property, insisted that the basement should legally belong to him and he took the matter to the court. The decision was ruled in his favour, ordering Zhang to pay financial compensation and confirm the ownership of the basement.
Doubts still prevail on how the woman sneaked in and out of the basement or whether she had a secret exit door as well. In the meantime, the story has gone viral, receiving divided reactions from people. One of them wrote, “The thought alone is chilling. Just imagine living upstairs while a stranger drinks and watches TV below.”
Some even ended up comparing this incident to 2019’s South Korean film Parasite, where the poor Park family started working for the wealthy Park family as house-helps and ended up taking over the mansion and experiencing the luxuries of the upper-class after the family went on a holiday. But things take a mysterious turn when they discover a hidden man in the Park family’s basement leading to a series of chaos.
