Surat cops’ timely arrival saved a wedding after the groom’s family ditched the bride over a food shortage during the event in the Varachha area on Sunday night.
The bride, disturbed by the behaviour of the groom and his relatives, dialled 100, prompting the police to bring the groom and his family to the Varachha police station around 2:30 AM on Monday.
After settlement at the police station, the couple asked the cops to help with the garlanding and ‘Bidaai’ rituals, which the officers carried out by stepping in as ‘Baratis.’

Groom’s Family Saw Food Shortage As Insult
When dinner was served, the food shortage angered the groom’s family, who viewed it as an insult. With numerous guests from the bride’s side present, the situation quickly escalated into a heated argument.
It worsened when the groom refused to take the bride along and left the venue.
Distressed by the situation, Anjali Kumari contacted the police helpline (100) to file a complaint. The police responded promptly and brought Rahul to the station.
“After receiving the bride’s complaint, we assisted her. We sent teams to the groom’s home and requested him to accompany us. We counselled him, explaining that the wedding should not be called off over such a minor issue, especially since his father had made extensive preparations. The groom agreed but was unwilling to return to the wedding venue, fearing further clashes between the families,” Varachha police inspector RB Gojiya was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
The officer added that at the couple’s request, they completed the remaining garlanding and ‘Bidaai’ rituals at the police station, acting as ‘Baratis’ and arranging garlands and flowers to ensure the ceremony was properly concluded.
