The 70-year-old Chinese man refused Rs 2 crore to move away from his home to make room for a new highway, but now he regrets turning down the offer.

Huang Ping, a man from Jinxi, China, is now regretting his decision of turning down a large relocation offer from the government. The 70-year-old refused 1.6 million Yuan (approximately Rs 2 crore), to move away from his home to make room for a new highway. Now, the road is getting built around his two-storey house and the roof of his house is almost at the same level as the motorway. Huang, who lives with his 11-year-old grandson, spends most of his day in the town center to escape the noise and dust from the ongoing work. He feels like he “lost a big bet” as his home shakes and he worries about the future when the motorway will officially open, realising now that staying was a mistake.
As per Metro, the homeowner said, “If I could turn back time, I would agree to the demolition conditions they offered. Now it feels like I lost a big bet. I regret it a bit.”
A video circulating online shows Huang Ping’s house sitting in the middle of a highway under construction. To reach the property, people in the video are seen walking through a long and massive tunnel, clearly curious about the situation. Although the house is on private land, it is surrounded by dust and construction equipment.

While Huang Ping regrets his decision, many locals find his situation intriguing and visit the house to take pictures. Locals have started calling him the “strongest nail house owner,” which is used for homes that stand tall even when construction projects are built around them because the owners refuse to leave. In China, it’s common for the government to build roads or developments around homes when the owners don’t agree to move or accept the compensation.
According to reports, the secretary of the Jinxi County Party Committee claimed that Huang refused to move because he wasn’t happy with the government’s offer. After several unsuccessful attempts to negotiate, the authorities decided to build a bypass on both sides of Huang’s house to continue the construction.
In a previous incident, another homeowner in Shanghai had blocked a major road for almost 14 years, but the home was finally demolished in 2017. The residents had turned down all relocation offers since 2003, claiming that the compensation was too low. However, they agreed to move after being offered £300,000 (approximately Rs 3 crore).
